Last week I went with some friends to see Velvet Goldmine at the Summerscreen thing at McCarren Pool.  I love VG, yet every time I see it I forget (on purpose) that the band Placebo has a pretty prominent part in the narrative.  Though not as Placebo.  I forget this on purpose because when in London for New Year’s —1997?  Maybe?— I was celebrating at a house party and met lead singer Brian Molko.  He was all blabbin’ about his band, who hadn’t yet made it but was going to be B-I-G big, and I was thinking, “Yeah, yeah, you’re half-American with British teeth and your roots are growing in on your jet black dye job.  We’ll see how far you get.”  Regardless, we snogged at the stroke of midnight.  Soon after I took a cab home with my friend while the rest of the ecstasy-fueled party went on into the wee hours.

Well, whoops, Placebo did become big.  Well, big-ish.  And surely now Molko does not want for black nail polish or a touch up for his dye-job.  And his teeth have the gleam of success.  Oh well.  Serves me right, I guess, for being judgey.
